Welcome to the Neuro High Dependency Unit website at Leeds General Infirmary.

This website has been designed and built by the staff on Neuro HDU and its purpose is to give information to visitors on the unit and provide a canvas for staff to publish their work. We hope you can find the information you require. If you should have any problems navigating the website or find any errors please contact us.

It is important to us that we make the admission of your relative/friend here on the unit a positive experience. To ensure the best care can be given we need you to help us and this can be done in so many ways.

• Tell us about your relative/friend, what do they like, to eat etc.

• Bring in their favourite music.

• Bring in their toiletries and favourite body sprays.

• Photographs and cards will be pasted or hung around their bed space. (It is important to emphasise that we are restricted for space and we can allow only a limited amount of these.)

Talk to us. We want to know how you are feeling.

We encourage family involvement on Neuro HDU. If you would like to help us wash or give your relative/friend their meals please tell us and this can be arranged. Research shows that recovery can be accelerated when families are involved in the care process. Something as simple as telling us what your relative/friend likes to eat and drink could have an impact on their recovery. REMEMBER, WE DO LISTEN TO YOU.

Our visiting times are structured to ensure we give the best care to your relative/friend without distraction. We can be flexible with these times if you wish to come in and help wash your relatives.

Please speak with the nurse who is looking after your relative/friend.

We encourage only two visitors to each bed space. If you wish to bring young children please discuss this with a member of staff.

There is a visitors waiting area on the corridor outside the entrance to wards 23/24. If the room is locked speak to a member of staff.

Toilets can be found in the foyer area on B floor. Food outlets are also available in this area. The nearest restaurant in on C Floor in the Clarendon Wing.

Unfortunately we do not have over night stay facilities.

There are a few things on the unit that we don't like.

We do not allow fresh flowers on the unit. It has been found that the water the flowers sit in can harbour and breed bacteria which are not conducive to a clean atmosphere in the unit.

We do not appreciate bad language or behaviour in the unit, if there is a problem you wish to discuss please address the member of staff who is caring for your relative/friend or speak to the nurse in charge. We employ a ZERO tolerance policy.

It may not always be possible to speak to a member of the medical staff (doctors) but the nurse who is caring for your relative/friend will try to answer all your questions or arrange a time when you will be able to speak to a member of the medical team.

It is very IMPORTANT that you wash your hands when entering and leaving the unit, this helps to minimize the spread of infection. There is a strict NO SMOKING policy on the premises of the Leeds General Infirmary.
